He joins 10 others as push athletes and joins his brother, Mike, on the team. Mike was a push athlete in 2010 for the US and was a member of the 2013 World Champion team. South River junior attackman-midfielder Gunnar Schimoler has orally committed to UMBC. The son of the late John Schimoler, who played on Syracuse's 1983 national championship team, the 6-foot-1, 175-pound recruit started as a sophomore for the Seahawks, helping them to the Class 4A-3A state championship. He is a nephew of the late Paul Schimoler, who was a four-time All-Ivy League and All-America goalie at Cornell and regarded as one of the all-time greats at the position.

In 1983, the Orange clinched its first NCAA title and began a run of 22 straight Final Four appearances. SU opened the season with seven consecutive wins before losing to Army. In the NCAA title game, SU downed Johns Hopkins by rallying for a 17-16 victory after trailing 12-5 in the third quarter.

In 2004, then-9-year-old Jaclyn Murphy of Hopewell Junction was diagnosed with a medulloblastoma, a malignant brain tumor. Throughout her surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, the little girl drew hope from a photograph of a college lacrosse player cheering the team’s win, which Jaclyn, also a lacrosse player, saw on the hospital’s wall.

As organizers prepare for next year’s 25th edition, the Lake Placid Summit Lacrosse Classic has taken its’ place among the top events hosted in the Adirondack region. From an economic standpoint, the week-long competition in August has become another engine for area businesses alongside the Lake Placid Horse Show and the Ironman Triathlon. Figures provided by the Lake Placid CVB and Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism pegged estimated direct spending for 2013 at $4.2 million.

Former Nottingham High School boys lacrosse coach Michael Durgey died on Monday. He was 42. Durgey took over as head coach of the Bulldogs in 2008. He spent the last couple of seasons as an assistant lacrosse coach at Manlius Pebble Hill. He also served as an assistant coach at Chittenango and Jamesville-DeWitt. Durgey was an assistant coach for Jamie Archer on J-D's 2007 state championship team.

Lacrosse’s latest crossover athlete is Rob Pannell, who has signed on as the newest member of Team Wheaties. Terms of the deal were not disclosed but Pannell joins NFL star Adrian Peterson and a Team Wheaties roster of other athletes that includes speed skaters, snowboarders, extreme athletes, a blade runner and a para-swimmer.

Syracuse hosts its annual Cuse Play Day on Sunday, Oct. 6 at the Lampe Athletics Complex. The Orange will compete in seven contests against six other local Central New York schools, including Colgate, Cornell, Albany, Niagara, Canisuis and Cortland. Each game will last 25 minutes with a running clock and no timeouts.

In the spirt of Rensselear Polytechnic Institute, which calls its teams the Engineers, do the math. RPI coach Leslie Delano has an almost five-month old daughter sitting at home. On May 11, RPI, which had never even reached an NCAA tournament when Gettysburg won it all in 2011, shocked Gettysburg in the NCAA second round. One day later, on Mother’s Day, RPI nearly did it again before falling to Middlebury in the quarterfinals.

The fall ball schedule has been updated on an ongoing basis, but one of the most recent changes deserves a special note. Because of the budget stalemate in Congress, the Defense Department has temporarily suspended sports competition at the service academies. Therefore, the Air Force men's lacrosse team will not be participating in the Play for Parkinson's event at Episcopal School (Alexandria, VA) this weekend.

For the first time in the history of the Bowhunter Cup, the exhibition game will be played at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena in Six Nations, as the Iroquois Nationals host USIL's Developmental Team.
