We crowned ten more divisional champions on Sunday and finished the 2016 Lake Placid Summit Lacrosse Classic without too much fuss or controversy. Games ended around 2:30 PM, and after I finished collecting and then uploading the few final scores, the place started to empty out and look pretty desolate. It’s amazing how quickly the players and their families can jump in their cars and be gone!

Today was the busiest day of the week – only 109 games in 13 divisions, plus an MLL Veterans’ All-Star Game. It was also the longest – we were on site at 7:00 AM and we didn’t leave the HQ tent until dark, maybe around 9 PM. It was the complete opposite of yesterday for me. Yesterday I occasionally ventured around to the fields, whether to visit with friends or to clean up some incomplete score sheets. Today I felt like I was confined to solitary confinement – when I did step out of the trailer I felt I needed to shade my eyes, just like in the prison movies…

The Alumni teams were comprised of approximately 40 former Major League Lacrosse players and coaches.

Thursday at Lake Placid was the lightest day so far, with just seven fields going and only 51 games played. We had eight divisions playing – the eight oldest men’s age brackets, but all games were played at the North Elba Athletic Fields (NEAF) except for three played at the end of the day at the Northwood School. It was another sunny day, probably too hot to be ideal, and somehow I managed to spend enough time outside the trailer and main tent to get some serious red coloration on my face and arms.

Well, Day Three saw the crowning of nine divisional champions today, and by 1:30 some 89 scholastic boys and girls teams had started to head home. However, before we could take a breath or exhale, there were another 30 teams showing up for their first games. The Super Grand Masters (50+), the Ultra Grand Masters (55+), and the Past Masters (60+) all kicked off their week with games.

I heard it more than once on Tuesday – “You can’t get better weather than this.” And I may have said it once or twice myself. Tuesday was an absolutely beautiful day in Lake Placid . . .

One of those rivalries will see a new chapter added on Wednesday as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes National High School Team will meet SweetLax, a Rochester-based program, in the finale of the Boys 2017/2018 Gold division. It’s yet another matchup of two programs that have met for several championships in numerous divisions in recent years at the Summit Classic, including in last year’s Boys 2016/2017 Gold title game.
