The Orange played their first game on May 14, 1998 at three-time defending champion Maryland. Syracuse won nine games in its inaugural season and, a year later, won the ECAC Championship. Syracuse held its first scrimmages of the 2017 season on Sunday afternoon in the Ensley Athletic Center. The Orange took a 7-6 victory over Hofstra in the opening game and beat Le Moyne 8-3 in the only half of play open to media members.

The lacrosse world has reveled in the recent success of Chris Hogan in the NFL. Hogan, a wide receiver with the New England Patriots (author note: GO PATS!), played lacrosse at Penn State before getting on the football field at Monmouth as a fifth year senior. However, there is another player who is gaining attention on both the football and lacrosse fields as a high school junior. Ricky Miezan is one of the top-rated lacrosse recruits for the class of 2018, but the North Carolina Tar Heels commit recently received his first football offer from the Syracuse Orange.

With the milestone, the 34-year-old netminder became just the fifth player in NLL history to reach the 6,000 club.

The National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE) may soon approve a performance standard for chest protectors after testing on a mechanical surrogate. The proposal is eligible for final balloting at NOCSAE’s winter meeting Jan. 27.

Cramblet graduated from Army as the lacrosse program's all-time leading scorer, having compiled 150 points. Cramblet became the first Army player ever to reach 100 career goals, finishing with a then-record 107 tallies. In Cramblet's junior year, he helped Army to a share of the 1969 national championship when the Black Knights finished 10-1.

The event allowed over 400 attendees a chance to interact with the Black Knights while learning more about the game of lacrosse. The first session was the younger kids with ages 6-11 and they learned the basics from ground balls, shooting and faceoffs. The second session included ages from 12-18 and had a little more pace and speed to the different drills.

The Spirit of Tewaaraton is presented to an individual who has contributed to the sport of lacrosse in a way that reflects the spirit of the values and mission of the Tewaaraton Award. Past recipients include former Big Red coach Richie Moran, as well as Dick Edell, Diane Geppi-Aikens, Sid Jamieson, A.B. "Buzzy" Krongard, Roy Simmons Jr., Bob Scott, Brendan Looney, Oren Lyons and Tina Sloan Green.

The FLG in 3d Fall Shootout, one of the biggest and most highly attended lacrosse tournaments of the year, was held in mid November at Appoquinimink High School in Middletown, Delaware. 3d Rising was there for the weekend, shooting photos, taking in the action.

We finally made it through the notes we took and collected throughout the two-day event, which brought more than 80 teams to Middletown on back-to-back days and drew more than 150 different college coaches over the course of the weekend.

It’s billed as the sport’s largest educational opportunity, but on Saturday, the US Lacrosse Convention felt more like the sport’s largest family reunion.

There were literal families – like the Stanwick brothers (Steele and Wells) presenting the two-man game on the STX Live Field, the husband and wife team of Team USA’s Paul and Kelly Rabil involved in presentations and autograph sessions throughout the Baltimore Convention Center, and the Thompson brothers sharing their story — but also the lacrosse family in a metaphorical sense.

Dan Sheehan, the only coach at Le Moyne College to lead his team to a national championship, is in his 20th season as the men’s lacrosse head coach. One of the nation’s most successful lacrosse coaches, he has posted a 269-46 (.854) overall mark, including five National Championship game victories. Since the turn of the century, Sheehan’s Dolphins are 257-29 (.899). His 269 career victories are the 24th-most in the history of NCAA lacrosse.

Marie McCool's game-winning goal with 2:15 remaining lifted Team USA past a surging Florida and gave the host team a 20-19 victory in the first game of Team USA's Spring Premiere on Saturday at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. McCool (North Carolina) tied for the team lead with three goals and added an assist.

After a Gators score, Team USA took the early momentum with a 3-0 run off of goals from Katie Schwarzmann (Maryland '13), Kayla Treanor (Syracuse '16) and Alex Aust (Maryland '13). All three finished with two goals on the day.

The U.S. women’s national team defeated Florida 20-19, despite a quick lead for the Gators just 59 seconds into the game. Team USA led 11-8 at halftime, but the turning point came with under 13 minutes left to play when Florida went on a five-goal hot streak, sparked by Mollie Stevens with back-to-back goals and capped with a Shayna Pirreca tally to tie it 17-17.

The Cazenovia College men's lacrosse team's schedule is out for the spring 2017 season. The Wildcats finished the 2016 campaign with a 8-7 record overall and 6-2 record in the North Eastern Athletic Conference, ending the season securing the third seed in the NEAC and earning a playoff berth. Looking to build on a playoff run from a season ago, the Wildcats open up 2017 with a trip down south.

When Matt Gill first started playing lacrosse at age seven he often played in and out of the goal. “Early on while I was playing in the youth league, I didn’t like to run and I knew that if I played goalie, I wouldn’t have to. At that age, everyone wanted to try goalie, but as we got higher up through the years, I solidified myself more as a permanent goalie,” he said. Now Gill will be playing goalie for NCAA Division II lacrosse at the College of St. Rose.

On Saturday, Jan. 7, the Knighthawks will recognize 92-year-old Louis Levi Oakes, who is the last surviving WWII Akwesasne Mohawk Code Talker. Seventy years after serving in the United States Army, Oakes and his fellow Akwesasne Mohawk Code Talkers are finally getting the recognition they deserve.
