Austin Staats is part of the NLL Draft Renunciation list, meaning he intends to declare for the draft and renounce his remaining NCAA eligibility.

Staats’ status has been the source of speculation for years. Now, with his career at Onondaga Community College complete, it looks like he’ll be in an NLL uniform in 2019 instead of transferring to a four-year college and taking a path similar to his brother Randy.

In the annals of Hobart College athletics, few figures cast a longer shadow than Dave Urick, who coached the Statesmen lacrosse team to 10 straight NCAA Division III Championships during the 1980s. In honor of Urick's 19 years coaching at Hobart, and his indelible impact on the Statesmen lacrosse program, the Colleges will name the stadium at the Caird Center for Sports and Recreation in Urick's honor. Following the dedication ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 29, the venue will be known as Boswell Field at David J. Urick Stadium.

Self-starts, a cleared defensive zone for 8-meter free positions, and a new checking category for play at the U14/U13 level are among the new US Lacrosse girls’ youth rules approved for the 2019 season.

Developed by the US Lacrosse Women’s Rules Committee, most of the changes align with the recent changes announced for girls’ high school rules. US Lacrosse youth rules seek to balance safety concerns and the specificities of the youth game with a larger understanding and commitment to the growth and evolution of the sport.

Mulheron is a 1978 CA graduate and coached three sports in football, basketball and lacrosse. Pane is a 2004 CA graduate and played football, basketball and lacrosse. He died in 2016 after battling cancer.

I was lucky enough to get in on the action and play for Laxified, a team started up by Lake Placid legend Lyn Reitenbach. Dan Fuller was a good long-stick midfielder on a very good Baldwinsville High School team. He played two years of varsity lacrosse as the Bees had some of their most successful seasons in recent history. He earned Honorable Mention All-League honors this past May, and graduated in June . . .

. . . But for two days in Lake Placid last week, Dan experienced something pretty special. He got to play four games in the Men’s 18+ Gold division with the Burning Orange team, playing alongside a number of former Syracuse University alums whom he had idolized growing up.

Webster Thomas girls lacrosse coach Chris Barnes has died.

Mr. Barnes had been fighting colon cancer for the better part of two years. After an extended stay at the hospital, Mr. Barnes passed peacefully at 8 a.m. Wednesday with his family beside him.

It's not as if Ben Dwyer isn't used to hearing his name called at awards ceremonies. The recent graduate of Baldwinsville's C.W. Baker High School was valedictorian of the Class of 2018.

He also won the inaugural All-Central New York overall male athlete of the year award for excellence in three sports - football, hockey and lacrosse - and his academic prowess. He was a Section III Scholar-Athlete award winner from his school. But Dwyer's big year became huge today in Canton, Ohio, when the MIT-bound teen was selected as the 2018 U.S. Army-Pro Football Hall of Fame Award for Excellence winner.

Contract negotiations between Section III and representatives of officiating boards throughout the area have been stalled for nearly two years, and another failed effort to come to terms Wednesday left a cloud over the coming season.

"There's a lot of anger among the officials. They feel disrespected," said Jim Magnarelli, a spokesman for 43 boards of officials in 19 different sports. The biggest dispute is over pay for refs who have to travel long distances to their assignments.

Dick was a Physical Education Teacher and Coach with a teaching career spanning 33 years at Watertown High School from 1960-1991. During his career, he coached several sports, including baseball, basketball, football, lacrosse, and golf.

The NCAA men’s lacrosse rules committee meets next week. The conventional wisdom suggests that a standardized possession clock will be the main topic of conversation, and that one will be approved and implemented for the 2019 season.

Recently, though, momentum has built in the opposite direction. U.S. National Team and Duke head coach John Danowski, via the USILA, sent this message to all DI head coaches on Monday, prompting more consideration ahead of the bi-annual meeting.

Summertime has become a prime season for youth lacrosse. Camps, clinics and club tournaments populate the calendar during these months and keep many players heavily engaged with the sport. Summer is, of course, also the hottest time of the year, with temperatures and humidity much higher than they are during other seasons. The coupling of lacrosse activity with summer weather can lead to the risk of heat related illness.
