ITHACA, N.Y. – The USILA Preseason Coaches' Poll was released earlier this week and the Big Red was tabbed to finish fifth overall. The SUNY Cortland men's lacrosse team is ranked nationally in two Division III preseason polls. The Red Dragons are ranked 18th by US Lacrosse Magazine and 19th by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA).
Head coach Steve Beville enters his 13th season with the Red Dragons this spring. Last year, Cortland finished 12-7, won the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title and earned a berth into the NCAA Division III tournament. The Red Dragons lost 16-12 at the eventual national champion, Wesleyan (Conn.), in the NCAA second round and tied for 17th nationally.

Katie Rowan, who was part of the greatest season in UAlbany women's lacrosse history, gets a chance to write another chapter as the new Great Danes head coach.
UAlbany hired Rowan, a Delmar native, in June. She previously worked for the school as an assistant coach on an America East championship team that went 18-1 and reached the NCAA quarterfinals in 2011.
Cornell lacrosse is back in its familiar position heading into the 2019 season — a contender for an Ivy League championship, and possibly a national title to go with it. The Big Red tradition is intertwined with winning, but it took last year to get the program back on that track.
Shawn Evans’ 2018 season was unlike any of his previous seasons. He totaled only 83 points and 49 assists – a solid season for most players, but a far drop-off from Evans’ five straight seasons of at least 103 points and 65 assists. After being traded mid-season from New England to Buffalo, the Bandits lost six of their final eight games and missed the playoffs. For the first time since 2010, Evans watched the playoffs from home.
2019 has been a different story.
SPARKS, Md. — US Lacrosse has announced updates to its box rules and points of emphasis for 2019. The points of emphasis for 2019 relate to abuse of officials, illegal body checking and boarding, helmets and penalties.
In April of 2012, I bought my Nissan Sentra, coincidentally, just a few weeks after I started writing my weekly Road Trip Dad blogs. I nicknamed the car Rocinante, the name of Don Quixote’s battle-worn steed and, not as coincidentally, also the name John Steinbeck gave to his pick-up truck as he headed cross country in a journey that inspired Travels with Charley.
This week, almost seven years later, I’m putting the old girl out to pasture.

ALBANY — Getting used to the new assistant coach leading the University at Albany men’s lacrosse program has been easy for the Great Danes.
One of them, much-hyped freshman Tanner Hay, is a cousin of John Maloney. Plus, several of the team’s upperclassmen, such as senior Matt Perla, played with Maloney — a 2016 UAlbany graduate — during Maloney’s senior season with the Great Danes.

I was out in Missouri recently, working with a notable high school program. After a meeting with the team, an underclassman came up and asked me, “What is the single defining characteristic of outstanding individual leadership?”
He put me on the spot, but the word I chose that day, fearlessness, might still be my choice.
The Buffalo Bandits today announced the team will host its sixth annual Tucker Out Lymphoma Night when the Colorado Mammoth visit KeyBank Center on Saturday, Feb. 2. This coming season, the Great Danes will face four teams ranked in both polls: Yale, which is No. 1 in both polls, as well as Maryland, Cornell and Syracuse. Yale (April 19) and Maryland (March 9) both visit Tom & Mary Casey Stadium.
The difference between a top-10 starting spot in the USILA poll was via just one point, as Notre Dame (168) edged out the Orange (167) for 10th. Yale, who 'Cuse will face in their final closed scrimmage this weekend, checks in as the unanimous preseason favorite after capturing the NCAA Championship last year.
Sunday evening’s game at Mohegan Sun Arena set up perfectly for the New England Black Wolves. They were home, well rested, and flying high, riding a three game win streak. On the flip side, the Buffalo Bandits were coming in after losing 18-13 in Rochester the night before.
“When coach said, ‘Hey, it was going to be you, Tumi and Treanor,’ I’ve been waiting for that,” Dowd said. “I thought that would be quite the combo.”
In their first game together against England, Dowd assisted Treanor, Tumolo assisted Dowd and then Tumolo assisted Treanor. Dowd and Tumolo finished behind Treanor with three points each.
On Saturday night, the Knighthawks were poised to avenge an earlier loss to their storied rivals, the Buffalo Bandits. Here are the best shots from Saturday's game.
It was, by any measure, the most memorable season in University at Albany men’s lacrosse history. Sixteen wins. Six weeks as the nation’s No. 1 team. Six All-Americans. An America East championship. Two NCAA Tournament victories. And, of course, a trip to NCAA Championship Weekend.

Syracuse, N.Y. -- The Syracuse lacrosse team will be without the services of defensive midfielder Dami Oladunmoye and defender Jerry Staats this season.
Orange coach John Desko revealed the statuses of the players after the team hosted a pair of scrimmages against Vermont and Hofstra on Saturday.
“I’ll start with this,” Marr said during his opening remarks at Friday’s media day event for his program at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium. “A lot has been said about our team over the last, probably, six months. More has been talked about what we lost and, to be quite honest, as a coach and as players, we’re really tired of hearing about what we’ve lost.

Lacrosse has been intertwined with Native American culture since its inception, and most would not hesitate to emphasize the role that the Native American people have played in growing the sport. A good number of North America’s premier lacrosse talent, and perhaps future NLL stars, are proud to call themselves Native American. Below is an update on the Native American players who are currently competing at the college level.
We wanted to know what DIII lacrosse coaches are thinking, so we asked them. Ten coaches from varying levels of DIII lacrosse -- from a first-year program (Kurt Ohlen from Johnson & Wales in Colorado) to national championship winning coach of a perennial contender (Steve Beville of Cortland) -- responded to our three-question survey.
For Ierlan, the last five years of high school and college lacrosse has been nothing short of straight-up winning. Consider: He’s taken more than 2,000 face-offs over that five-year span and won a staggering 78 percent of those draws. And the two teams he’s played for in high school and college over those five years went a combined 92-10. Used with permission. CREDITS: photographer, Nicola Rinaldo; cover designer, Matt Cain.

ESPN sideline reporter/lacrosse analyst Paul Carcaterra witnessed it first hand and had a chance to experience the excitement with his memorable post game interview with Coach Shay when it finally kicked in that his team had just won it all.
Paul took some time to catch up with us and give us some of his insights & thoughts for the upcoming 2019 lacrosse season.

The 2019 Orange are thrilled to leave behind one of their stranger years, and not just because Syracuse staggered home barely above .500, went home following a NCAA tournamentfirst-round defeat by upstate rival Cornell — which beat the Orange twice — and failed for the fifth straight season to return to the final four.
The Le Moyne men's lacrosse program is centered on excellence.
The Dolphins have put the school on the map with their historic runs to Final Four Weekends and National Championships.
That's why last year's first round exit from the NCAA Tournament was so shocking.
Just over six years ago, RJ Kaminski was running the Sports Radio Club at Boys’ Latin School in Baltimore — an institution with a rich lacrosse history. He had not grown up a lacrosse player, but he knew the stars of the game.
Gary Gait didn’t call last season a fluke – and he certainly didn’t make excuses – but the 12th year coach of the Syracuse women’s lacrosse team acknowledged that his team’s schedule did his team no favors.
“We scrambled to get a schedule together,” said Gait, who added issues with the supposed renovation of his home facility necessitated the mad dash. “We had five ranked opponents in eight days. We had the worst schedule we’ve ever had.”
After going 3-1 on the recent homestand, the Buffalo Bandits will hit the road for back-to-back games this weekend. For the 2019 playing season, US Lacrosse has introduced a new checking category for 14U and 13U girls players. Called transitional checking, this rule is intended to provide a middle ground between full checking at the high school level and the modified checking for 12U. Transitional checking will help maintain the safety of youth players to check sticks held above shoulders and provide the rule structure for a player development pathway into full checking at the high school level.
Each of the past three seasons, I've written a one-sentence preview of every team in men's Division I lacrosse. It's a fun exercise to read through the entire Face-Off Yearbook (almost sold out), and it provides a good bird's-eye view of the national landscape in addition to the normal preseason prognostication of All-Americans, rankings and conference outlooks.
The 2019 season begins in less than two weeks and like everyone else, we’re really excited to get things going here at College Crosse. To christen the new season, here is our 2019 College Crosse Preseason Top 20 Poll.

While Bob Shillinglaw was the head coach of the University of Delaware Blue Hens, it seemed like they thought it was their job to play the first NCAA game of the year. More than once they played their first game on February 1st, and if Coach Shill hadn’t retired recently, they’d probably be playing their opener in January by now. Now that Delaware is under the direction of Ben DeLuca, their opener isn’t until February 9 – and they are still playing four games in the month of February.
At the beginning of every lacrosse season, I always watch this short film by Mike Powell. It documents our experience traveling the Pacific Northwest on the Grow The Game Tour in 2012, and watching it always reinforces our purpose.
If you've been following college football closely on social media over the past few weeks, you've likely come across the term "transfer portal" several times. Since it debuted on Oct. 15, it's still not a widely known platform in the lacrosse world —outside of college coaches and adminstrators.
So what is the NCAA Transfer Portal and how does it work?
The word “consistency” is derived from the Latin consistentem, meaning: “to stand firm”. As an official, I heartily endorse the original meaning of the word. Officials must be resolute, a bulwark against the winds of popular opinion. The best officials stand between two opposing forces and enforce agreed-upon rules, without bias, and never allow the masses to influence their decisions.
To bring attention to those players, DIIIlacrosse.com has created the Extended All-America Team.
To be considered as an EAA, a player must play for a team in a non-power conference, like the CCIW or the NEAC, and is not selected for Inside Lacrosse’s team.
“It’s always tough to see great players leave your program,” Marr said. “It’s hard for me to turn the page. But when you recruit the younger guys — it’s their time. This is their opportunity, and it’s fun to coach them. You’re just working with a whole new group, forming chemistry a

Lampson came to Elmira following a two-year stint as an assistant coach at traditional New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) power Colby College. The Mules amassed a record of 24-11 during her tenure and earned a NESCAC title in 2017. She previously served as an assistant coach at William Smith and Morrisville State, coaching a conference Defensive Player of the Year at each stop.

Back to work for the Bandits as they go into preparation for Saturday's game against the Philadelphia Wings.

In just two years at Oswego, Serron made his presence known. Serron still ranks No. 1 in both points and goals in a single-season for the Lakers. During his junior year, Serron recorded an astonishing 100 points, including 56 goals. Both remain the standard for Oswego men's lacrosse, but more impressively, less than 35 players have ever reached the 100-point plateau in the entirety of their careers. The two-time All-SUNYAC First Teamer was able to accomplish the feat in just one season and is one of just three players in program history to reach 100 points in a two-year career. His 188 career points is just 13 shy of the program record, set by fellow Hall of Famer and former teammate Ken Walker.
Team USA’s Joe Fletcher, one of the best defensemen in the world, seldom talks like it. He doesn’t look like it, either, his frail frame and hunchback stance often noted by his teammates and foes alike.
Um, Philadelphia, we have a problem.
In case you haven’t heard, we’ve got a fresh case of ignorance and insensitivity, racism and cultural disrespect in our lacrosse world. And this time, it originates from the world of “professionals,” not naïve children or biased fanatics.
Perfect timing to get the kids who start school ball ready to go for the season, which will begin right after. Ages 7-16 from 9:00-12:00 Monday – Friday. PHILADELPHIA— In-game announcer Shawny Hill and the Philadelphia Wings apologized on Sunday after he made racially insensitive remarks about Georgia Swarm forward Lyle Thompson. Hill called for Thompson's pony-tail to be cut during Georgia's 13-11 National Lacrosse League win at Philadelphia's Wells Fargo Center on Saturday night.
Thompson, from Onondaga Nation, N.Y., and his brothers Jerome and Miles all play for the Swarm and wear braided pony-tails in tribute to their Indigenous heritage.

STX and Inside Lacrosse are pleased to announce “The Season 2019,” a five-chapter multi-platform video and digital content series that will spotlight two of the sport’s most interesting programs: the historic Cornell Big Red men’s team, and the hard-charging Florida Gators’ women’s team.
Albany is still tops in the league, but the gap is closer than it has been in recent memory. The graduation of an impact class that included Tewaaraton finalist Connor Fields and several others, plus the departure of face-off specialist TD Ierlan leaves uncertainty around the Danes. Combine that with a lot of talent returning to a surging Vermont team, an experienced Stony Brook team, plus a UMBC team with one of DI’s best defenses, and it could be a battle for the top spot in the tournament.

As part of the groundbreaking "The Season 2018" project with STX and Inside Lacrosse, we sat down with Syracuse's Charlie Lockwood to talk about the legend of the No. 22. Lacrosse as we know it won’t fly in the Olympics.
And so perhaps the biggest obstacle in the way of the sport’s inclusion in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles — the FIL cleared a major hurdle Nov. 30 with provisional recognition by the IOC — is the need to develop a new discipline of the sport that’s faster in pace, shorter in length, more confined in space and limited in numbers.
The Syracuse men's lacrosse team opened their 2019 preseason on Wednesday, beginning with the team's annual media day.
The players met with numerous local affiliates before finishing the day with the preseason conditioning test. Head Coach John Desko, four-time ACC Coach of the Year, said that the day gave him 'pre-game jitters' as he embarks on his 21st season at the helm of the program. Hear what the legendary coach had to say at his first press conference of the year:
There are two starting spots up for grabs entering the spring. The first is the third starting attackman to join current starters Stephen Rehfuss (20 Gs, 28 As) and Nate Solomon (22 Gs, 15 As). The first person Desko mentioned was senior Brad Voigt (9 Gs, 5 As), who was the team’s man-up specialist and fourth attackman a year ago. He also brought up sophomore Owen Seebold (two shots in 10 games) and freshman Griffin Cook as guys that will probably see the field as well.
Syracuse, N.Y. -- As heated as the three-way race for the Syracuse lacrosse starting goalie job gets this spring, junior Drake Porter promises to approach it with a level head.
And that’s a developed personality trait that could separate Porter from the crowd.

Larry Glenz was my social studies teacher and junior high lacrosse coach. Ken Sicke was a chemistry teacher who also coached my JV soccer and lacrosse teams. My driver’s ed teacher was Jim Imholtz; he also coached the school’s club ice hockey team. Marty Goldberg was my varsity soccer coach, and he taught social studies.
