Road to LA28 Heats Up: Continental Qualifiers 2026 Launch Olympic Dream for Lacrosse Sixes

With less than three years until the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 (LA28) kick off, lacrosse’s historic return after a 120-year absence is shifting into high gear. World Lacrosse has officially activated the qualification pathway, with Continental Championships set to ignite the competition from September to December 2026.

Lacrosse Sixes — the fast-paced, six-player format — will take center stage at LA28 (July 24–29, 2028 at Exposition Park Stadium). Only six men’s and six women’s teams will battle for Olympic medals, making it one of the most anticipated debuts of the Games.

Clear Three-Stage Qualification Path (for LA28):

  1. Continental Championships (Sept–Dec 2026): Nearly 100 teams from four regions — Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and Pan-America — will fight for spots in the World Championships.
  2. World Lacrosse Sixes Championships (Oct–Nov 2027): The top 16 men’s and women’s teams compete for world titles and direct Olympic berths.
  3. Final Qualifying Tournament: The last chance to secure one of the remaining Olympic spots.

The United States, as host nation, receives an automatic berth if it meets participation requirements, while powerhouses like Canada, England, and Australia are already ramping up preparations. Several continental events have confirmed venues:

  • Pan-American: Oshawa, Ontario, Canada (September 2026)
  • Asia-Pacific: Sunshine Coast, Australia
  • European: Salou, Spain (November 2026)

This is a golden opportunity for emerging nations, including growing programs across Asia, to chase their Olympic dream on the biggest stage in sports.

The Emotional Story: Honoring the Creators

One of the most compelling narratives is the journey of the Haudenosaunee Nationals — the Indigenous Confederacy that created lacrosse over 1,000 years ago. While World Lacrosse strongly supports their inclusion, IOC rules currently make it uncertain whether they can compete under their own flag. Many view this as a historic chance for the Olympics to truly honor the sport’s origins.

World Lacrosse CEO Jim Scherr has emphasized: “LA28 will write the next chapter for lacrosse — a truly global, exciting, and community-connecting sport.”

With Olympic ticket registration now open for the draw, fans worldwide (including the growing lacrosse community in Vietnam) are buzzing with excitement. The Sixes format promises non-stop action — lightning-fast transitions, highlight-reel goals, and thrilling end-to-end play that will captivate new audiences.
